History & Background
Developed by the Bangladesh Army as a resort in the early 2000s on a ridge roughly 2,200 feet above sea level, Nilgiri sits within the traditional homeland of the Bawm and Khumi indigenous peoples of the Chittagong Hill Tracts. Its name, meaning "blue mountain," describes the hazy blue-green ranges visible on clear days stretching toward Myanmar. The site opened Bandarban's remote hill interior to mainstream domestic tourism for the first time, alongside continuing military-administered access controls for security in the border region.
