History & Background
On the bank of the Mahananda River, this Victorian-style government rest house (reportedly built by the erstwhile King of Cooch Behar) is the best-known base for viewing Kanchenjunga — the world's third-highest peak, roughly 157 km away — without needing a passport or visa, best seen mid-October to mid-November.
