History & Background
China clay (kaolin) deposits were identified in the low hills of Bijoypur, near the India border in Durgapur upazila, in the mid-20th century, and mining operations developed to supply the raw material for Bangladesh's ceramics industry. Decades of excavation have left behind a landscape of shallow pits where white and pale clay layers are exposed alongside pools of blue-green water, creating a striking, almost lunar scenery that contrasts with the lush green Garo Hills and the Someshwari River visible nearby, close to the Garo indigenous homeland straddling the Bangladesh-India border.
