History & Background
Founded in 1996 by a group of citizens and freedom fighters determined to document the nine-month war that created Bangladesh, the museum moved to its current purpose-built complex at Agargaon in 2017. Its galleries trace the Bengali language movement of the 1950s, the political buildup of the 1960s, the genocide of March 1971, and the armed liberation struggle that followed, using original documents, guerrilla fighters' weapons, blood-stained clothing, and testimonies. An eternal flame and a section on the 1971 genocide serve as a solemn memorial to the estimated three million people who died.
