History & Background
Designed by architect Syed Mainul Hossain and completed in 1982, the monument consists of seven isosceles triangular concrete planes of increasing height, symbolizing the successive stages of Bengali history and sacrifice leading to independence in 1971. It stands on the site where Pakistani forces mounted defensive positions during the war. The surrounding complex includes mass graves of martyrs, a lake, and a museum-like approach garden, and the site hosts the nation's official wreath-laying ceremonies every 16 December (Victory Day) and 26 March (Independence Day).
