History & Background

The district's history is closely linked with the medieval cities and frontier zones of Gaur and the Bengal Sultanate. The area contains some of Bangladesh's most important mosque and madrasa ruins from the Sultanate and Mughal periods. It later functioned under colonial administration as part of Rajshahi and became a separate district in 1984. The district's historical identity remains tied to borderland commerce, Islamic architecture, and the wider Gaur-Malda cultural zone.
