The zoo began from early government efforts to establish a zoological collection in Dhaka in the 1950s. It was later moved and expanded, and the present Mirpur site was inaugurated on 23 June 1974. The name was changed from Dhaka Zoo to Bangladesh National Zoo in 2015.
