History & Background

Keramatia Mosque is associated with the Muslim saint Hazrat Maulana Keramot Ali Jaunpuri, who travelled to Rangpur in his later years to spread Islam. Following his death on 30 May 1873, the mosque was built beside his shrine in his memory. Constructed in Mughal architectural style blended with local craftsmanship, the rectangular mosque measures about 42 feet by 13 feet internally, with walls roughly 3 feet thick and a height of about 18 feet, and is topped by domes rising from an octagonal drum decorated with moulded ornamentation. It remains one of the oldest mosques in Rangpur town and continues to draw visitors to the adjoining shrine.
