History & Background
Established in 1854 by Scottish planter Malcolm, Malnicherra was the first commercial tea garden planted in the Indian subcontinent, predating even the famed gardens of Assam and Darjeeling by a few years, and helped launch Sylhet's identity as a major tea-producing region under British colonial agricultural policy. It remains a working estate today, producing tea for both domestic and export markets, and its neatly pruned bushes carpeting rolling hills on the edge of Sylhet city have become emblematic of the region's landscape.
