History & Background
Located at the mouth of the Karnaphuli River near Chittagong's port and export processing zones, Patenga developed as the city's accessible weekend beach through the mid-20th century as Chittagong grew into Bangladesh's principal seaport. Unlike the open ocean beaches further south, its setting alongside shipping lanes and the naval and air force bases nearby gives it a distinctly urban, industrial backdrop, and it remains most popular for its sunset views and horse-riding rather than swimming.
