The Teesta is the main river of Bangladesh's northern plains, irrigating a large share of Rangpur division farmland through the Teesta Barrage Project. Its seasonal flow, heavily affected by upstream dams in India, has made it a recurring topic in Bangladesh-India relations.
The Teesta Barrage in Nilphamari and riverside picnic spots in Lalmonirhat draw local day-trippers, especially in the dry-season char landscape.
Irrigates much of northern Bangladesh's agriculture via the Teesta Barrage, and supports seasonal char farming.
