The only major river of the Chittagong Hill Tracts, the Karnaphuli was dammed at Kaptai in 1962 to create Bangladesh's largest artificial lake and its only hydroelectric power station. Downstream, it becomes the shipping channel for Chattogram, the country's principal seaport.
Kaptai Lake boat cruises, the Rangamati hanging bridge, and river views along Chattogram's waterfront are the main draws.
Home to the Kaptai Hydroelectric Power Station â Bangladesh's only hydropower plant â plus Chattogram Port shipping, fisheries, and timber/bamboo rafting from the hill tracts.
