The Padma is the Bangladeshi name for the main channel of the Ganges after it enters the country. It defines the border and lifeline of the southwestern and central floodplains, feeding a dense network of distributaries before merging with the Jamuna. The 2022 Padma Bridge, built across it at Munshiganj-Shariatpur, transformed travel and trade between Dhaka and the southwest.
Sunset boat rides and picnics on the sandy chars near Rajshahi and Munshiganj, plus the Padma Bridge viewpoint at Mawa, are popular day-trip destinations from Dhaka.
Supports hilsa fisheries, riverbank agriculture, and sand extraction; the Padma Bridge now carries road and rail traffic that once depended on slow ferry crossings.
